From Marina Glogovac, President and CEO of CanadaHelps:
“As we have seen since the beginning of the pandemic, online giving has grown significantly this year. Traditional, in-person fundraising activities have moved online and the charitable sector is continuing to adapt and evolve.
The GivingTuesday movement has grown steadily each year since it launched and this year it grew significantly. We are pleased with the results and very proud that Canadians are again generously helping support the needs of our charities during such a challenging year.
Results* through CanadaHelps from GivingTuesday 2020:
- On December 1st, over $11 million was raised for charities across Canada using the CanadaHelps platform, up 123% from GivingTuesday 2019.
- A total of 9,366 charities received donations via CanadaHelps from more than 77,000 donations (up 112% from 2019).
- Over 47,000 Canadians donated to charity using CanadaHelps, more than double the number from 2019.
While we are inspired and encouraged by these results and the generosity of the more than 47,000 Canadians who supported a charity or cause on GivingTuesday, we know these results may not be indicative of overall trends in the charitable sector. Charities have been severely affected by increased demand for their services amidst the pandemic and the loss of critical funding streams this year, including fundraising events and earned revenue. These results must be viewed within this broader context.
Fundraising results through the remainder of December 2020 will be critical to the survival of many charities. It is our hope that these positive trends continue to make up the shortfalls charities have faced in 2020.”
*Note: Results are from donations made through the CanadaHelps platform and do not include funds raised through other online channels.
