The Charity Insights Canada Project (CICP) published insights into technology adoption in the Canadian charitable sector. According to the research, only 13% of participating organizations noted that they are fully utilizing available technologies and digital tools, another 63% indicated they are moderately using the tools and technologies available, and 7% indicated their organization does not use or uses very limited technologies and digital tools.

Survey Highlights:

Participating Canadian charities have faced both barriers and opportunities when it comes to technology adoption:

  • Resource constraints are the biggest barrier — A majority of respondents agreed that limited human resources (70%) and financial constraints (72%) are impeding their progress.
  • Digital readiness is uneven across the sector — While 63% said they have the digital tools needed to do their work well, yet 55% felt they have the knowledge and expertise to optimize their use of those tools.
  • Demand pressures hinder progress — Over half of the respondents agreed that increased demand for services has reduced their ability to invest in digital skills.

Many Canadian charities have made tangible progress in adopting technology:

  • 46% have dedicated more funding to software and digital tools.
  • 41% have improved their digital training and skills.
  • 25% have added staff with specific IT expertise.
