Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE) announced that nominations are now open for the 2026 Governor General’s Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case. The Awards program, established in 1979 for the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking Persons Case in Canada, honours recipients annually, including at least one youth (aged 15 to 30) from across the nation. They carry on the legacy of the Famous Five, embodying courage, integrity, and dedication. These awards celebrate individuals who have made remarkable strides toward gender equality in Canada, representing diverse backgrounds and regions.

Nomination Deadline: Monday, July 1, 2026

Guideline for Nominators

  • Any group or individual is welcome to submit a nomination for a Persons Case Award. Individuals may not nominate themselves. Past candidates and recipients have included:
    • Corporate leaders or board members
    • Volunteers
    • Facilitators and advocates
    • Artists
    • Community activists
    • Specialists in issues facing women and girls
    • Academics and researchers
  • Candidates must be Canadian citizens
  • Youth award candidates must be between 15 and 30 years of age, and all other candidates must be over 30
