This Advertising Services Privacy Notice (the “Advertising Privacy Notice”) explains how CharityVillage handles Personal Information in connection with those services.

This Advertising Privacy Notice supplements CharityVillage’s general Privacy Policy. Capitalized terms not defined in this Advertising Privacy Notice have the meanings given to them in the Privacy Policy.

What Advertising Services Does This Notice Cover?

This Advertising Privacy Notice applies to advertising, sponsorship and promotional services delivered through:

What Information Does CharityVillage Process?

In providing advertising services, CharityVillage may process:

  • business contact information for advertisers, agencies and their representatives;
  • information required to schedule, administer, invoice and support campaigns;
  • technical information associated with CharityVillage’s website, emails, social media and other digital channels;

  • information collected or transmitted through authorized advertising measurement technologies.

Depending on the channel and technology used, this information may include an Internet Protocol address, device and browser information, timestamps, approximate location derived from an Internet Protocol address, platform identifiers and unique or pseudonymous campaign identifiers.

How Does CharityVillage Use Information?

In providing advertising services, CharityVillage may process:

  • publish, distribute, administer and measure advertising campaigns;
  • deliver advertising through the intended CharityVillage channel;
  • verify that advertising services were provided as agreed;
  • prepare campaign performance reports;
  • communicate with advertisers and agencies;
  • maintain the security and integrity of its services;
  • detect errors, fraud or misuse; and
  • comply with legal, regulatory and contractual obligations.

CharityVillage limits its collection, use and disclosure of Personal Information to purposes that are reasonable and permitted by applicable law.

What Information Is Provided to Advertisers and Agencies?

CharityVillage ordinarily provides advertisers and their agencies with aggregated or de-identified campaign information that does not identify individual audience members. This may include total deliveries, impressions, opens, views, clicks, reach and other campaign performance measures.
CharityVillage does not provide advertisers or their agencies with CharityVillage subscriber lists or directly disclose subscriber names or email addresses for advertising purposes unless the individual has provided meaningful consent or the disclosure is otherwise permitted or required by law.
Where authorized advertising measurement technologies are used, limited technical and engagement information may be transmitted to an advertiser, agency or authorized service provider as described below.

What Advertising Measurement Technologies May Be Used?

Advertisements distributed through CharityVillage’s website, emails or other digital media channels may include technologies used to deliver, verify and measure advertising. These may include:

  • tracking pixels and tags;
  • click-tracking links and redirects;
  • cookies or similar technologies; and
  • unique or pseudonymous campaign identifiers.

When an advertisement is displayed, opened, viewed or selected, these technologies may transmit information to an advertiser, its agency or an authorized service provider. The information may include an Internet Protocol address, device and browser information, the date and time of the interaction, the CharityVillage channel through which the advertisement was delivered and information about how the advertisement was viewed or selected.

Depending on how the technology is configured and the information available to the recipient, this information may constitute Personal Information.

CharityVillage permits advertising measurement technologies through its channels only for authorized purposes, such as delivering advertisements, measuring campaign reach and performance, verifying impressions, opens, views or clicks, preventing fraud and confirming that advertising services were provided as agreed.

Unless otherwise clearly disclosed and permitted by applicable law, CharityVillage does not authorize these technologies to be used through its channels to identify subscribers by name or email address, create profiles for unrelated purposes, infer sensitive information, sell Personal Information or track individuals across unrelated websites or services for behavioural advertising.

CharityVillage will provide appropriate notice and obtain consent where required by applicable law.

Publication of this Advertising Privacy Notice does not by itself authorize the use of any particular advertising measurement technology or establish that its use complies with applicable law. Each proposed technology and data flow must be separately reviewed and approved by CharityVillage and may be used only where its configuration, purposes, notices, consent mechanisms, retention and disclosures comply with this Advertising Privacy Notice and applicable law. CharityVillage may reject, restrict or disable any technology that does not satisfy these requirements.

What About Social Media Platforms?

Sponsored or promotional content may be published through CharityVillage’s accounts on third-party social media platforms. Those platforms may independently collect Personal Information about users and their interactions in accordance with their own privacy policies, settings and terms.
CharityVillage may receive aggregated or de-identified information about the reach, impressions, views and engagement generated by a post. Individuals should review the privacy settings and privacy policies of the social media platforms they use.

What About Advertiser Websites?

Advertisements may link to websites, applications or services operated by advertisers or other third parties. An individual who selects an advertisement may be redirected through a click-measurement service before reaching the destination.
Information collected after an individual selects an advertisement may be governed by the privacy policies of the advertiser, measurement provider or other applicable third party. CharityVillage does not control the privacy practices of third-party websites, applications or services.

Does CharityVillage Use Service Providers?

CharityVillage may use service providers to distribute emails, host content, manage digital channels, deliver advertisements and measure campaign performance. These service providers are required to protect Personal Information, use it only for authorized purposes and comply with applicable privacy and data protection requirements.
Personal Information may be processed or stored outside Canada and may therefore be subject to the laws of the jurisdiction in which it is processed or stored.

How Long Is Information Retained?

CharityVillage retains Personal Information only for as long as reasonably necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected or to satisfy applicable legal, regulatory and legitimate business requirements.
CharityVillage may retain aggregated or de-identified campaign information that does not identify an individual for reporting, analysis, historical comparison and business planning.

What Choices Do Email Subscribers Have?

CharityVillage sends newsletters, email advertising and other commercial electronic communications in accordance with applicable requirements. These communications identify CharityVillage as the sender, provide applicable contact information and include a functioning unsubscribe mechanism.
Unsubscribing ends the delivery of advertising included in CharityVillage’s marketing emails. It does not prevent an individual from encountering advertising through CharityVillage’s website, public social media posts or other publicly available digital channels.
