Food Banks BC published their second annual Hunger Report, which paints a stark picture of food insecurity in British Columbia. The research found that food insecurity is at a record high in BC, with food bank usage reaching unprecedented levels. Food Banks BC notes that the crisis is a result of systemic issues, including poverty and the frayed social safety net. The report stresses that food banks can no longer compensate for fundamental gaps in the system.

Key findings:

  • 1.3 million or 24.4% of British Columbians are experiencing food insecurity.
  • 33,000 children received food from BC food banks, 31% of all clients.
  • 79% increase in the number of visits to BC food banks since 2019.
  • 9% annual increase in the proportion of racialized clients at BC food banks.
  • 75% of people using BC food banks are renters.

The report provides policy recommendations to address these pressing systemic issues and reduce the pressure on food banks. From building community food security to improving household incomes and supporting Indigenous food sovereignty, Food Banks BC provides tangible recommendations to support our communities.
