The Charity Insights Canada Project (CICP) published insights into CRA filing and regulatory processes. According to the research, the majority of organizations always file required CRA returns electronically (71%), while some organizations still file on paper or by fax (12%). Organizations that do not regularly file electronically noted the following as the primary reasons for filing on paper or by fax: complexity of CRA’s online systems (34%), preference for paper records (23%), accessibility issues / technical barriers (20%),  and lack of staff/personnel capacity (15%).

Organizations also provided feedback regarding the benefits and challenges they experienced with electronic filing:

  • Faster than paper submission: 56%
  • Reduces administrative time: 40%
  • Improves accuracy and record-keeping: 28%
  • Easier to correct errors: 20%
  • Hard to navigate CRA portals or sign-in systems: 18%
  • Not sure: 16%
  • Need for staff training or technical skills: 8%
  • Other: 8%
  • System outages or technical problems: 8%
  • N/A: 8%
  • No significant benefits or challenges: 6%
