The Government of Alberta announced that nominations are now open for the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards, which will be awarded on International Volunteer Day on December 5. Albertans are invited to nominate a youth, adult or senior volunteer who has contributed to the well-being of their community. There are two awards which will be awarded in the following three categories:

  • youth (up to 24 years old)
  • adult (25 to 64 years old)
  • senior (65 years old and over)

Breaking Barriers is the fourth category which recognizes exceptional volunteers who are working to create communities that are diverse and inclusive. Three awards will be presented to individuals in the following areas:

  • addressing racism (volunteerism to address racism or reduce barriers for racialized communities and/or increase and promote intercultural understanding and trust between communities)
  • advocating for 2SLGBTQQIA+ inclusion (volunteerism to promote 2SLGBTQQIA+ inclusion or address barriers for 2SLGBTQQIA+ people)
  • fighting gender discrimination (volunteerism to fight gender discrimination and reduce barriers for women, girls and gender-diverse people)
