Mental Health Research Canada published the Sector Snapshot: Indicators of Wellbeing Across Public, Private and Not-For-Profit Report, which offers a new perspective on how mental health indicators of employed Canadians compare across each employment sector. The report was developed based on information compiled from 12,625 employed Canadians who answered questions about their mental health online for a blind survey between July 2024 and July 2025 for Mental Health Research Canada’s (MHRC) National Population Polling Initiative Polls 21 through 25.

Key findings:

Compared to all other sectors, Canadians working in:

  • The public sector reported the highest levels of burnout.
  • The private sector reported the highest levels of coping and was least likely to report needing access to mental health support.
  • The not-for-profit sector reported the lowest levels of coping and resilience, as well as concerning trends around the impact of mental health symptoms on the ability to function at school, in social engagements or at home.
