Statistics Canada released the 2022 data on rural and small town nonprofits in Canada. There were nearly 136, 000 active nonprofits operating across Canada in 2022 – over 29,000 of which were active in rural and small town areas. The number of nonprofits operating in rural and small town areas accounted for just over one-fifth (21.3%) of all nonprofits actively operating in Canada in 2022.
The number of nonprofits operating in rural and small town areas in Canada decreased by 1.9%. Nonprofits operating in rural and small town areas employed over 453,407 people, which was up by 2.1% over 2021. Nonprofits in rural and small towns earned $28 billion in total revenue, which was up by 3.1% over 2021. The most common activities for these nonprofits included religious activities (23.1%), sports, recreation, and social clubs (17.7%), and social services (13.4%).
