The Law Foundation of British Columbia announced a $5 million grant fund to support one-time projects to advance access to justice for people and communities in British Columbia. Applications from existing nonprofits and collaborative entities/groups operating in British Columbia and/or for the benefit of people living in British Columbia are welcome. Organizations may apply for up to $250,000 total in grant funding. The Law Foundation of British Columbia welcomes projects that are collaborations between two or more organizations; however, the Foundation also welcomes projects from individual organizations. Grant-seekers do not need to be registered charities.

Eligibility

The Foundation will fund time-limited projects that improve access to justice for people and communities in BC through the creation of new programs or the expansion of existing ones.

Applications are expected to fit one of the following project types to be eligible for funding:

  1. Legal research projects that engage and centre communities most impacted by the research issues identified;
  2. Projects intended to expand, deepen or sustain the impact of existing programs. These projects could make program improvements in areas including but not limited to capacity, accessibility, and/or innovation; and
  3. Pilot projects.

To be eligible for funding, projects must also fall within one or more of the Foundation’s five statutory mandate areas:

  • Legal aid
  • Legal education
  • Legal research
  • Law reform
  • Law libraries
