Applications are now open for the Canada Rental Protection Fund (CRPF), which aims to support community housing providers in acquiring existing affordable rental housing and protecting its affordability for the long term. Over the first five years, the Fund has the potential to protect 7,000 affordable rental homes across Canada, aligned with market conditions and opportunities. This will help more renters remain securely housed in the communities they call home.
The Fund is designed to:
- Increase community housing stock through acquisitions.
- Leverage the federal investment of CRPF funding to attract additional public, private and philanthropic investment.
- Create a revolving source of capital that can support future acquisitions.
Funding is available to eligible community housing organizations from the following categories with at least three years of housing experience:
- Community housing providers, including societies, nonprofit housing co-operatives and other organizations that are wholly nonprofit in structure, operation and purpose;
- Government housing organizations, including housing entities established by provincial, territorial or local governments, but excluding governments themselves;
- Indigenous housing organizations, including entities established to develop, own or operate housing for Indigenous peoples; or
- First Nations, Inuit or Métis governments or governing bodies.
The CRPF does not fund new construction or the acquisition of newly built, unoccupied housing, or individual units. Properties and organizations must meet CHAF’s eligibility requirements and demonstrate the capacity to maintain the protected property and its affordability over the long term.
