On Wednesday, October 14, 2020, The United Way, the Community Sector Council of Nova Scotia, the Bhayana Family Foundation, and the Province of Nova Scotia celebrated the Nonprofit Sector, its 6,000 organizations and its many invisible champions! October 14th has been proclaimed by the Premier of Nova Scotia to be a Day of Recognition for the Nonprofit Sector and is the first province in the country to recognize the sector in this way!
The virtual celebrations kicked off with a flag-raising, followed by a celebration of twenty Bhayana Family Foundation Invisible Champion Award winners who have been nominated by their peers for exceptional contributions and positive impacts on their communities and those they serve.
The nonprofit sector in Nova Scotia “employs 20,000 people and contributes directly over $1 billion to our [Nova Scotian] economy every year”, says the Community Sector Council – NS. With remarks from the Honourable Stephen McNeil, Premier of Nova Scotia, the Honourable Myra Freeman, former Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, and the Honourable Leo A. Glavine, Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage, and the awards generously sponsored by the Bhayana Family Foundation and spearheaded by the efforts of Raksha Bhayana, the event was a special moment in history for the nonprofit sector in Canada.
