Wrapping up an eventful year with the conversations that shaped our sector
As we come to the end of another transformative year for Canada’s nonprofit and charitable sector, I’ve been reflecting on the conversations that resonated most deeply with our listeners, and with me personally, as host of CharityVillage Connects.
Every episode we produce is rooted in a simple goal: to bring our community fresh insights through honest dialogue, and to provide practical guidance to help organizations navigate the challenges and opportunities that are ever-present in our sector. But some episodes spark something bigger. They broaden our perspectives in ways we hadn’t expected and give voice to the larger challenges we’ve grappled with, sometimes without knowing where to turn for help. These are the episodes that share ideas and spark collaboration, helping us find solutions together.
Here are my Top 6 Episodes of 2025 — the ones I believe every nonprofit leader and professional should listen to as we close out this eventful year.
1. AI for Impact: How Nonprofits Are Turning Tech into Social Good
This episode struck a chord with nonprofit leaders across the country, and it’s no surprise why. AI is no longer a distant concept; it’s a practical tool reshaping everything from donor engagement to program delivery. What I loved about this conversation was how grounded it was. We didn’t speculate; we explored real examples from organizations already embracing AI to advance their missions.

If your organization is still figuring out where to begin with AI, this episode offers clarity and inspiration to take that first step with confidence.
2. Food Insecurity and Burnout: The State of Nonprofit Workers
This was one of the toughest — and most necessary — episodes of the year. The data we discussed on food insecurity, burnout, and systemic strain within the nonprofit workforce is deeply unsettling. Yet, the conversation didn’t stop at the problem. Sector leaders and researchers joined us to chart a path forward, sharing solutions rooted in equity, care, and sustainability.

3. The 2025 Giving Report: Disruption and the Digital Shift of Canadian Donors
The charitable giving landscape is evolving rapidly, and this episode gave us a front-row seat to those changes. We unpacked key insights about shifting donor behaviours, emerging donation trends, and the broader economic realities shaping how Canadians give.

4. Should Money Talk? Inequities in Funding and Influence in the Nonprofit Sector
This was one of the conversations that stayed with me long after the microphones were turned off. We took a candid look at why a small number of large charities exert outsized influence over funding decisions and public policy, and what this imbalance means for the thousands of smaller nonprofits doing critical community-based work.

If you’ve ever felt that the voices of smaller organizations aren’t being heard, this episode shines a light on that frustration — and, importantly, offers ideas for change.
5. Growing Pains: How Canada’s Population Boom Affects Nonprofits
Few topics have sparked as many conversations this year as Canada’s rapid population growth. In this episode, we asked a central question: What does this demographic shift mean for charities and nonprofits already feeling stretched thin?
Our panel of sector experts provided thoughtful, nuanced answers, acknowledging both the increased strain on services and the potential for growth in volunteers, donors, and talent. It’s a must-listen for leaders planning for the future in a changing Canada.

In this timely episode, we examined where Canadian organizations stand today — what’s progressing, what’s stalling, and what’s at risk. The discussion is frank, honest, and ultimately hopeful, offering practical strategies to keep this work moving forward with integrity.
