The Charity Insights Canada Project (CICP) published insights into charities’ contributions to affordability, drawing on responses from organizations across Canada. Nearly three-quarters (73%) of participating Canadian charities reported providing programs or services free of charge, and nearly half (45%) reported offering programs or services at a reduced or subsidized rate. Canadian charities also reported helping people access or navigate public benefits or supports (33%), providing goods at low or no cost (e.g., food, clothing, supplies) (28%), and providing financial assistance, vouchers, or direct aid (27%).
Canadian charities were asked to share approximately what proportion of their services are provided at no cost:
- None (0%): 6%
- Very few (1-9%): 10%
- Some (10-39%): 16%
- About half (40-59%): 7%
- Most (60-89%): 13%
- All or nearly (90-100%): 46%
- Not sure: 2%
