Statistics Canada published the formal volunteering by retired Canadians 2023 data. The report indicates that Canadians over the age of 55 (29%) were less likely than younger Canadians (34%) to volunteer for a charity or nonprofit; however, individuals who did volunteer dedicated more hours (155 hours). The average annual hours based on retirement status: fully retired (173 hours), semi-retired (163 hours), and not retired (120 hours).
Canadians noted the following reasons for volunteering:
- To improve their overall wellbeing: Fully retired – 61%, semi-retired – 57%, not retired – 50%
- To network or meet people: Fully retired – 50%, semi-retired – 51%, not retired – 40%
- Because their friends volunteer: Fully retired – 39%, semi-retired – 45%, not retired – 32%
