Statistics Canada released the 2023 data on rural and small town nonprofits in Canada. There were nearly 136,225 active nonprofits operating across Canada in 2023 – 28,892 of which were active in rural and small-town areas. The number of nonprofits operating in rural and small-town areas accounted for just over one-fifth (21.2%) of all nonprofits actively operating in Canada in 2023.

The number of nonprofits operating in rural and small-town areas in Canada decreased by 0.4%. Nonprofits operating in rural and small-town areas employed over 449,058 people, which was down 1% over 2022. Nonprofits in rural and small towns earned $26.1 billion in total revenue, which was down 6.2% over 2022. The most common activities for these nonprofits included religious activities (22.8%), sports, recreation, and social clubs (17.3%), and social services (14.2%).
